PIONEER CULLOM RESIDENT DIES IN PONTIAC HOSPITAL
----------
MAURICE KILEY PASSED AWAY
SUNDAY NIGHT AT AGE OF 88.
FUNERAL TODAY
--------
Maurice
Kiley, one of the pioneer residents of Sullivan township,
passed away at St. James hospital in Pontiac Sunday night, March 23rd, at about
10:00 pm. Death was due to a complication of diseases brought on by his
advanced age of 88 years. His health had been failing for the past two
years, and took a decided change for the worse early in the winter. He
had been a patient at the hospital for a few weeks. Mr. Kiley was born in
county Waterford, Ireland, on May 3\21, 1841, being one of a family of six
children. He was the last of his immediate family to pass to the
Beyond. At about the age
of 21 he left his native Ireland, and came to America to seek his fortune, settling first in LaSalle County,
Illinois. He was united in marriage at LaSalle sixty years ago to Bridget
Fraher. To this union were born six children, two daughters and four
sons, all of whom are living except on son, David who died last October.
Mrs. Kiley preceded her husband in death on December 29, 1918.
Fifty-three years ago the Kiley's came to
Livingston County to make their home, and remained residents of the Cullom
community the rest of their lives. Mr. Kiley followed the vocation of
farming during his active years. He, with his wife, moved into the
village of Cullom over twenty years ago. Mr. Kiley is survived by two
daughters, Mrs. J. P. Kane and Mrs. H. R. Cavanaugh, both of Mason City, Iowa,
three sons, John, James, and Elmer, of Cullom; also seventeen grandchildren,
and a host of other relatives and friends.
In the
passing of Mr. Kiley this community loses another of its pioneer residents,
whose ranks are steadily diminishing. The community will miss this genial
old man, who always had a pleasant word and greeting for everyone.
Funeral services were held from St. John's Catholic Church in Cullom this
(Thursday) morning at 9:30, being postponed from yesterday on account of the
blizzard, Burial was in St. John's cemetery.
Respectfully submitted,
Carmel Husfield Saxon, daughter of Cecilia Kiley,
granddaughter of David Kiley and great granddaughter of Maurice Kiley(twin of
John Kiley)
